The Early Period Complications in Patients who were Performed Abdominal Surgery Intervention and the Nursing Practices for These Complications

Objective: This research was done as a descriptive study to determine the early complications after abdominal surgery intervention and to determine the appropriate nursing practices related to these complications.

Materials: The research sample consisted of 67 patients who had abdominal surgery in between September 15, 2009 and January 15, 2010 in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Government Hospital's surgery ward. Data collection was done with a questionnaire which was constructed by the researcher based on the related literature. The data was collected by the researcher through face to face interviews with the patients and the analyzing the patient's files. Percentage calculations, Pearson chi-square test and Fisher's Exact Test were used to evaluate the data.

Results: According to the research results; the most common problems during the early postoperational period were pain in the surgery area, coughing, nausea, swallowing difficulties, constipation, trapped gas. It has been seen that nursing practices as doctor's order and drug administration, giving as appropriate position, making the patient stand up earlier and activepassive exercises and, monitorization of vital functions were more commonly used comparing with the other nursing practices.

Conclusion: Based on the research; it was suggested that the appropriate post-operative procedures to be done by the nurses should be determined and training of clinical nurses and in this regard the sufficient reason of the aspects of nursing care in practice should be investigated.
