Reflection of Child Neglect and Abuse to Researches In Turkey: A Literatüre Review

Aim: The aim of this study was to review the research articles about child neglect and abuse in Turkey.

Material and Methods: In this descriptive study, single screening method among general screening models and document review technique were used. Literature search was conducted in national databases including Hacettepe University Libraries, Turkish Medline and Ulakbim Dergipark in October 2016, with the keywords of “child abuse, child neglect, physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, sexual neglect, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, Turkey” among Turkish and English articles.

Results: Of the research articles, 128 were included in the study. At the end of the review; it was found that most of the research (93.75%) were conducted in the last 10 years, 63.28% of the studies were descriptive, 72.66% of them were conducted by health professionals (physicians %86.02, nurses %11.83), 6.25% of them were conducted by multidisciplinary team members; among research conducted by healthcare professionals, 86.02% were carried out by physicians and 11.83% were carried out by nurses. Child neglect and abuse were studied together in 45.31% of the studies, children and adolescents took place in the population of 60.93% of the studies.

Conclusion: There is an increase in the number of research related to child neglect and abuse in our country. However, the majority of research in this field have low evidence level and it is important for nurses to conduct more research with higher evidence level.
